You may have heard the term Hyaluronic Acid before — it’s a product that’s been storming the beauty, skincare, and anti-aging worlds lately, appearing as an ingredient in many popular products.
One of its more common cosmetic uses is in dermal fillers.
At Jiva Spa Toronto, one of our anti-aging skincare options are Juvederm hyaluronic acid fillers.
But what exactly is hyaluronic acid, and how does it work?
Keep reading to find out.
What Is Hyaluronic Acid?
By the sound of it, hyaluronic acid doesn’t seem like the sort of thing you’d want to put near your face. In fact, it sounds more like the sort of thing you’d need to wear a hazmat suit near.
But it’s actually a naturally occurring substance in your body.
When we age, our faces loose subcutaneous fat, causing the facial muscles to become closer to the skin. This results in the development of fine lines and sagging skin.
Dermal fillers are used to reduce the appearance of small lines in the face and restore volume and fullness; most dermal fillers are made with hyaluronic acids.
In addition to its cosmetic uses, hyaluronic acid can also be used as a treatment for osteoarthritis or to help replace natural fluids in the eye during surgery.
Where Does Hyaluronic Acid Come From?
Occurring naturally in our skin and connective tissue, hyaluronic acids are a humectant, which means that they have a strong ability to attract and hold onto water.
Hyaluronic acid is found in the highest concentration in fluids in the eyes and joints, acting as a natural lubricant.
When used for medicinal purposes, it is extracted from rooster combs or made in the laboratory using bacteria.
What Does Your Body Use It For?
Hyaluronic acids have both moisturizing and anti-aging properties, and can be used on a variety of skin types.
When used as a filler, hyaluronic acids help retain moisture in the skin.
This is because hyaluronic acids encourage the body to produce more collagen. Collagen, which is primarily water-based, is what keeps skin looking youthful.
Hyaluronic acids also have antioxidant properties to help keep your skin protected from the sun, the environment, and harsh chemicals.
Since hyaluronic acids occur naturally in the skin, when used as a dermal filler, the chances of rejection are very low.
What Does A Medispa Use It For?
In your skincare products, you may find it listed in the ingredients as “HA”.
But since most topical creams with hyaluronic acid in the ingredients have it at a very small amount, and since it does not penetrate deep into the skin when applied topically, hyaluronic acid is most effective when used in a dermal filler such as Juvederm.
It’s important to note that dermal fillers like Juvederm are different than Botox – Botox is a different substance altogether, though they may be used for similar reasons.
There are many brands of hyaluronic acid with different combinations and concentrations, depending on where on the face they’ll be used. Formulas used around the cheeks are thicker and longer-lasting, while those used around the eyes are thinner and more pliable.
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are reversible.
