What is a Superfood?
Recently, the concept of the “superfood” has come up. It’s a food which is high in vitamins and minerals, and has been shown to have properties which fight diseases like cancer and heart disease, among other things.
These superfoods can be many different things, but they’re almost always a fruit or a vegetable.
Superfood #1: Blueberries
When the cells in your body use oxygen, they end up producing substances called “free radicals”, which can cause all sorts of problems for you. The reason why blueberries are so great is because they’re jam packed full of antioxidants, which slurp up these free radicals and neutralize them before they can cause any harm.
Blueberries are also high in vitamin c and potassium, the latter of which can be a little tricky to come by if you’re not eating bananas. These properties make blueberries a fantastic superfood!
Superfood #2: Kiwis
You might not think of the humble kiwi as a superfood, but it’s actually one of the most nutritionally dense fruits out there. Eat a kiwi and you’re getting a special delivery of antioxidants, potassium, fiber, vitamin A, and vitamin E.
Beauty treatments can make a big difference in the way you look and feel. But if you aren’t balancing that with proper nutrition, your results won’t be as dramatic as you hope.
Superfood #3: Leafy Greens
Leafy greens just might be the most important superfood in your diet! Jam packed full of vitamins, minerals, and fibre, leafy greens offer a great kick-start to your day!
Some of the best leafy greens include baby spinach, kale, arugula, swiss chard, and dandelion leaves. These guys have high doses of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as folate, calcium, and potassium, among other things. Starting your day off with this awesome superfood can do wonders to turbocharge your body!
Superfood #4: Avocados
Avocados aren’t just for guacamole! This superfood is sometimes called “the alphabet fruit” because of how many vitamins are in it. Folate, Magnesium, Iron, Fiber, Potassium, Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, C, E, K, beta-carotene, and lutein are some of the nutrients you can find in avocados.
On top of their fantastic health benefits, avocados are also very good for your skin! The natural oils and fats in them penetrate into your skin and keep it moisturized and clean. The vitamin A helps get rid of dead skin cells, and the antioxidants help remove toxins which cause you to age prematurely.
Superfood #5: Cruciferous Vegetables
You may not have ever heard of the term “cruciferous” before, but they’ve got tremendous health benefits!
Cruciferous vegetables include the leafy greens mentioned above, but they also include bokchoy, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, rutabaga, turnip, horseradish, watercress, radish, cabbage, and more. According to Dr. Pat Nardini of Nardini Naturopathic, a thyroid specialist and naturopathic doctor in Toronto, cruciferous vegetables have some incredible properties.

There are many other superfoods, of course, and these are just a few.
