When it comes to skincare, it’s important to be aware of the type of skin you have.
Certain treatments respond very well to certain types of skin, while others are more problematic.
However, how does this work when it comes to a microdermabrasion procedure for your skin type? Should you get a microdermabrasion if you have darker skin?
Read on to find out.
Differences In Melanin
The difference between a light-skinned person and a dark-skinned person is the amount of melanin. In general, those with darker skin have an increased level of melanin in their body when compared with those with lighter skin.
But what difference does this make when it comes to skin care?
The answer is, not really. Though skin care does differ from person to person to account for differences in oil production, there isn’t a lot of correlation between the differences in skin care for people of African descent vs. people of European, Asian, North or South American descent, or anywhere else in the world for that matter.
The prime difference in care is for things involving IPL lasers. Laser hair removal, for example, works best on people with light skin and dark hair. And while techniques are being developed that allow non-ideal candidates – those with a skin tone and hair colour that are similar, like a dark skinned, dark haired person, or a light skinned, light haired person – to get IPL services, the fact remains that currently it just doesn’t work as well for these people.
There’s also the fact that skin high in melanin is also high in melanocytes. These melanocytes produce your skin’s melanin in the first place, but they also make your skin react more visibly to stress. So the darker your skin is, the more likely you are to suffer from breakouts or irritation, especially when you factor the Sun’s UV rays, environmental pollutants, and chemicals into the mix.
However, when it comes to treatments like microdermabrasion, there isn’t a lot of difference from one ethnic group to the next.
