When most people get dry skin, the first thing they think about is moisturizing cream.
Thousands of people use gallons of moisturizing cream on their faces, hands and feet, trying to stop their skin from drying out. But while these creams and lotions can provide some temporary relief, they may not provide the definitive solution people hope for.
However, there is one treatment out there that can help dry skin sufferers – a microdermabrasion. This is one of the most effective spa treatments for dry skin, and it doesn’t take much time to do.
But what is a microdermabrasion? What are the benefits of a microdermabrasion? And should you get a microdermabrasion?
Keep reading to find out.
What is a microdermabrasion?
If you’ve never had a microdermabrasion before, you might be intimidated by it. After all, it has a big scary sounding name!
But don’t worry, it’s a simple, nearly painless procedure that can leave your skin feeling beautiful again.
So how does it work?
A microdermabrasion exfoliates the top layer of your skin, known as the stratum corneum, which consists almost entirely of dead skin cells. These dead skin cells build up on your skin naturally, but once they’re exfoliated away, they leave your skin soft, smooth, and radiant.
It takes about half an hour to get a microdermabrasion done, and most people report little or no discomfort at all. And because it’s a non-surgical face lift treatment, you can walk out the door right away after and enjoy the rest of your day.
Microdermabrasion and Dry Skin
So getting a microdermabrasion treatment will ultimately get rid of the dead skin cells on your face and leave you with softer skin and less wrinkles.
But what does that have to do with dry skin? Good question.
Because the stratum corneum is made up entirely of dead skin cells, it’s quite a bit rougher than the layer of skin that lies right below it. the rough, dry skin at the top allows the supple, softer skin to come through.
Microdermabrasion also increases the skin’s production of collagen, which keeps the skin elastic and stretchy. It also results in stimulated blood flow to these new skin cells, so the new skin cells should get more nutrition than the previous cells and therefore have better texture and elasticity.
Finally, the smoother skin also allows for greater penetration of moisturizer. This is important, since your skin will be in need of some high-quality moisturizer after the session.
In fact, your skin will also be more sensitive to sunlight after a microdermabrasion treatment, so you’ll need to make sure you either stay out of the sun or wear a sunscreen with a high SPF for a few days after the treatment.
Other Benefits of Microdermabrasion
Of course, microdermabrasion does not just make your skin softer.
It also helps eliminates imperfections in the skin, like gently sanding the imperfections out of a block of wood.
Many people get microdermabrasion treatments to reduce the appearance of wrinkles or fine lines, and may even eliminate them completely.
In fact, microdermabrasion treatments have even been able to reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks.
Microdermabrasion can also reduce the size of your pores, helping to unclog them.
This treatment isn’t limited to the face, though.
It is also especially effective in clearing up acne on the back—even those annoying acne scars.
